ABOUT US
Friends of Culver City Animals was
formed in May 2005. Thanks to our members, volunteers, steering Committee
and supporters, we are making progress toward our goal of having our
own Culver City animal care program.
Activities and Accomplishments
- 2008
• November 10, 2008 - The City Council voted to approve a contract to shelter Culver City Animals at the SPCA-LA shelter in Hawthorne. Start date to be announced.
• June 16, 2008 - On June 16, 2008 a majority of the city council approved the hiring of a full time Animal Services Officer. The officer should begin working in Culver City after Jan. 1, 2009.
• January 15, 2008 - FCCA members attended Carson City Council
meeting that directed an investigation into the acts of cruelty at
the LA County
Carson shelter.
• January 19, 2008 - Councilmember Gary Silbiger and FCCA members
joined animal welfare supporters at a demonstration at the Carson shelter
to protest the deplorable conditions. suffering and unnecessary death
inflicted on animals in LA County shelters.
• January 19 - June 7, 2008 - FCCA members participated in demonstrations at the Carson and Downey shelters
-A majority of the city council approved the hiring of a full time local animal services officer as a 24 month pilot program. Those who championed this measure and who consistently supported its immploementation prior to, and during, the 2008 city council elections were vice mayor Gary Silbviger and council members christop0her armenta and micheal o'leary.
Activities and Accomplishments -
2007
• Produced a DVD entitled "Licensing Saves
Lives" that was presented to the City Council during its regularly
scheduled meeting on June 18, 2007; this presentation was screened
a second time before the City Council on June 25, 2007 for the benefit
of Culver City residents.
•
Participated with Culver City council members and staff and Los Angeles
County officials at the successful Culver City dog licensing clinic
on June 16, 2007.
• Named a participating member of the official Culver City Local Animal
Control Subcommittee.
• Developing humane education and animal welfare
programs to benefit Culver City residents.
• Sponsoring a booth at the annual Fiesta La Ballona, August 25-26, 2007.
Activities and Accomplishments - 2006
• Addressed the Culver City Council on January
9, 2006 regarding the funding to support the hiring of a local animal
control officer.
• Participated in official Culver City Local Animal Control Subcommittee
comprised of 2 council members, government staff and FCCA members focused on
establishing a local animal care program .
• Created FCCA Outreach Program to meet with local
organizations to share information.
• Researched and lobbied for more user-friendly
pet-licensing programs such as PetData to ensure that Culver City has
control over pet licensing and licensing fees paid by Culver City residents.
• Began development of a FCCA Humane Education
Program for schools and organizations.
• Hosted a booth at the Fall Festival held at Farragut
Elementary School on October 28, 2006.
• Involved in outreach presentations to the West Los Angeles Bird Club
on June 14, 2006 and the Culver City Democratic Club on October 11, 2006.
• Visited the newly developed and successful Torrance Animal Control Program
on September 27, 2006 to further assist our local government in planning for
a Culver City Animal Control Officer and a local animal care program.
• Supported the City Council vote to require mandatory licensing, spaying/neutering
and micro chipping of Culver City pets.
Activities and Accomplishments
- 2005
• Received 1400 petition signatures in approximately
65 hours from Culver City residents in support of having a local Culver
City Animal Control Officer who will be a member of the Culver City
Police Department, AND in support of having a more local animal shelter.
• Addressed the City Council on June 13, 2005 and
August 8, 2005 with large turnouts from Culver City supporters, citing
problems with current Los Angeles county animal control services and
stressing the need for a Culver City Animal Control Officer.
• Submitted to City Council several detailed reports
as evidence of the need for a local animal control office and a more
conveniently located animal shelter.
• Located an animal welfare organization that offered
to donate a fully equipped animal control truck and transportation
van to Culver City.
• Made presentations to the Westside City Council
of Government , Culver City Democratic Club and Lindberg Park Neighborhood
Watch.
• Conducted extensive research into existing successful
local animal control programs in Santa Monica, Hawthorne, Torrance,
Lawndale, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach in order
to assist our local government in planning a program for Culver City.
• Prepared research and documentation to pursue
a Local Animal Control ballot initiative for a Culver City shelter.
• Presented to the City Council and the local press
numerous letters, declarations, incident reports and logs supporting
the need for a local animal control officer and better animal sheltering
services.
• Attended ongoing courses relating to the animal
control programs; the humane treatment of feral cats and trap/neuter/return
(TNR) programs; alternative animal shelters; the no-kill shelter movement;
animal behavioral issues; proper treatment of wildlife.
• Hurricane Katrina: FCCA led a networking campaign
to help animals being rescued as a result of the hurricane disaster.
